I manufacture furniture to order to your design or mine. I have built everything from Tables and benches to cabinets for storing patio furniture cushions. I work to most budgets except the same as the shop but cheaper. Cheap furniture is never a good idea, I have never seen a chipboard piece more than 50 years old, but I have seen solid wood furniture older than 200 years old.
With solid wood you can have a production line piece or a custom piece, I don't do production, I do one offs for discerning clients, this does not mean very expensive, because depending on the material used some pieces can be considered budget and others a good investment. I do build the odd piece using pressed board and veneers, but factually the material cost of building something wth recovered wood is sometimes cheaper than using board products.

Kiaat is a popular wood and I have found that the cost of using veneer and ply is almost always more expensive than using solid wood. Yesterday I sat with a client and we costed a cherry built in cupboard using shaped veneer doors vs solid wood doors and it was more cost effective to use solid wood as far as materials go. Obviously there is more effort in building a solid wood piece so the labour is dearer. but in the cherry example above including labour the cost difference was negligable. For the few extra Rand the solid wood was a far better option.
On occassion I build the odd piece while waiting for things to dry or waiting for materials, like this antiqued wine rack. I would consider this a cheap piece because it is made with board products (Supawood and Melamine) with a reclaimed Baltic Pine top. I built a similar unit in kiaat and the costs differed drastically.
